Own the room: Madame's take on confidence and style

Have you ever walked into a room and felt every eye on you? That feeling can be powerful, but it's not always what we expect. While TV shows often portray this "slay" moment as instant adoration, the reality is more nuanced. This post dives into the true meaning of slaying – not just through outward style, but through the authentic confidence that comes from knowing yourself. We'll explore how personal style, self-awareness, and an unshakable sense of self can empower you to own any space, even when faced with stares, whispers, or the dreaded silent treatment. Get ready to embrace your swagger and rock your confidence, no matter the crowd.

Never let your clothes wear you; you must wear them. True authentic style expresses who you are. This is easier said than done; it takes time to learn and know yourself. Trying new and different experiences helps you grow and discover who you are. But when it comes to commanding a room, this self-knowledge is vital, as it will resonate through your style. You begin a conversation and a narrative with your fashion and style without ever speaking. If your clothes are wearing you, you may end up feeling less than yourself.

People are drawn to confidence. It shows through your style, but even more so through your body language, your way of speaking, and how you interact with others. Sometimes this confidence is authentic, but for newcomers, projecting confidence can be a powerful first step. It's perfectly okay to feel nervous walking into a club where everyone seems to stare and judge you, especially in a setting where judgment can be prevalent. But if you can project outward confidence, people will be drawn to your presence. They will come closer and bask in it, and you should let them. If you can inspire confidence in others, let it flourish. No one will forget you for that.

Then there's the "unseen gaze." Some will give you the silent treatment, their eyes following you when you're not looking. Some do this because they're nervous about being seen admiring your style and presence. Others do it out of jealousy and deep-rooted insecurities. Some people can't share a space; they have a deep-seated need to be the center of attention. They see confidence in others as a threat. In my opinion, anything this fragile is not authentic. Authentic style should always inspire others to express their own. Don't feed the egos of those who would try to dim your inner light and confidence.

Self-awareness, especially in a stimulating environment, can be challenging. But knowing your strengths and weaknesses is vital to commanding any room with your authentic self. Ultimately, there are things you won't be able to do, whether it's telling jokes or wearing certain outfits. Knowing what you can do and embracing it is important for finding your own authentic self and style. Otherwise, people will sense when you're inauthentic. It's okay not to be able to do everything; as humans, we all have imperfections, and it's important to acknowledge and embrace them. After all, they are what make us unique, and this is crucial for rocking your authentic style and owning the room.

So, the next time you walk into a room, remember: your style is a story, your confidence is your power, and your self-awareness is your compass. Don't let the stares, whispers, or silent treatment deter you. Embrace your unique expression, own your presence, and let your authentic self shine. Slaying isn't about seeking external validation; it's about celebrating who you are, inside and out. The people around you will recognize that, and you'll radiate an undeniable presence.

The Synergy of fashion and Gender, and Becoming Art.

From the moment I was captivated by the vibrant world of high fashion on TV as a child, I knew that clothing held a power beyond mere functionality. The models gliding down the runway, the music pulsating, the sheer artistry of the designs, it was magic. For many in the queer community, fashion and makeup become more than just adornments; they are powerful tools for self-expression, artistic creation, and a profound connection to our inner selves. This post explores how embracing femininity and utilizing elements of drag, even outside of formal drag performance, can be a transformative journey of self-discovery, particularly for those in the queer community who may not identify as drag performers or as trans. It's about expressing the multifaceted nature of gender and celebrating the art of being ourselves.

(altered AI image of myself as a water painting. A metaphor for making oneself art,  AI is not required.)

Within the queer community, gender exists on a spectrum, a fluid landscape of self-expression. For many, exploring different facets of gender through fashion and makeup is a way to connect with deeper parts of themselves. It's not about putting on a costume (though sometimes it totally is, and that's okay too!); it's about embodying an energy, a feeling, a piece of your identity that resonates with a particular aesthetic. It's about recognizing that gender isn't just a social construct; it's a personal art form. (And sometimes, let's be real, it's about finally finding a use for that sequinned top you bought on a whim.

The act of dressing in a way that defies traditional gender norms can be incredibly liberating. It challenges societal expectations and allows for a profound sense of freedom. It's a release from the pressure to conform, a chance to play with identity and explore the many layers of who you are. For me, personally, I find inspiration in alt themes and dark goth concepts, often driven by the music I love. This personal connection to style allows me to express my unique identity and create looks that are both visually striking and deeply meaningful. (Plus, all that black eyeliner hides a multitude of sins...or at least a late night.

Fashion, in its essence, is art. Like painting or sculpture, it's a medium for expressing emotions, ideas, and experiences. Makeup, too, becomes a canvas for self-expression, a way to sculpt and define the face in ways that reflect inner feelings. When combined with the exploration of gender, this artistic expression becomes even more powerful. It's about creating a visual representation of your inner self, a tangible manifestation of your identity. (And sometimes, it's just about feeling fabulous, because let's face it, sometimes we all need a little fabulous in our lives.)

This exploration of gender expression through fashion and art isn't about mimicking someone else or adopting a persona. It's about uncovering the unique beauty within yourself. It's about giving voice to the aspects of your identity that resonate with a different gender presentation. It's about honouring the complexity of your being and celebrating the fluidity of yourself. It's about reclaiming the joy and wonder I felt as a child watching those models on TV, realizing that fashion can be a powerful form of self-expression and a connection to my inner child. (And let's be honest, sometimes it's just about finally having an excuse to wear that amazing pair of boots that are totally impractical but look so good.)

Clothes are powerful. They can shape how we see ourselves, how others see us, and even how we move through the world. They can inspire, provoke thought, and challenge perceptions. They can be a tool for creating new concepts, expressing our truest selves, and even inspiring others to embrace their own individuality. (Plus, a good outfit can totally boost your confidence. Just say'n.)

Gender expression is a deeply personal journey, a unique form of art. Whether it's a one-time exploration or a regular practice, it can be a powerful tool for self-discovery, stress relief, and personal liberation. For those in the queer community seeking to understand themselves more fully, embracing gender fluidity through fashion and art can be a transformative experience, a way to connect with the multifaceted nature of their identity and celebrate the beautiful spectrum of human expression.
