The ideal target of any bully, is one that appears weak and easy to pick on. They know that the individual is unlikely to fight back and that success or their desire to force their will on another, will prevail. When the bully begins their abuse, they do so with the assumption that they will not lose. The power they get from their abuse is intoxicating like a drug, and they keep coming back for more.
The Queer community is under attack from such bullies. The bullies are ideals that host a large number of individuals who feel safe when marching under the banners of their ideals. They think we are weak and easy to attack. Plus we live in a culture that cultivates more bystanders than people who will stand for what is right. Our bullies can pick on us and everyone watches while doing nothing. We seem ideal to be targeted. Almost consequence free.
While walking in Cologne, Germany. I witnessed by chance a rally consisting of thousands. Standing up against fascist ideals and Queer rights. They used drums that could be heard around the city centre. They sang while shaking vibrant signs. As they moved, I felt the power of the rally. It was the way they moved together as a community, and the sounds they made vibrating through my body. This showed empowerment and strength. They saying "we are not an easy target".
I fear in some places like back home in Canada. We are standing idly by as people take our power away, as we all passively watch. Even our allies passively watch. I'm not endorsing violence, in case someone was thinking that. I also do not particularly enjoy revolutionary Marxist sentiments. But I do believe we need to show leadership in our community to inspire others. We need to come together and show strength.
